Business Cards FAQs.
What is the best paper weight for business cards?
16pt is the practical standard and feels substantial without being novelty-thick. 14pt is acceptable for high-volume handouts, 18pt and up reads as premium, and painted or black edge cards run thicker still because they are layered stocks.
How many business cards should I order?
Order to about a year of realistic use rather than to the price break. 500 suits most individual professionals; 1,000 makes sense if you attend events. Ordering 5,000 to save per-unit cost usually means throwing out 3,000 after a title, number or logo changes.
What is the difference between silk, suede and soft-touch?
They are related matte laminates with different textures. Silk is a smooth soft-touch matte, suede is a deeper velvet texture that resists scuffing, and soft-touch is a general term covering both. All three reduce fingerprints compared to gloss and feel notably more expensive.
Can business cards be printed with white ink or on dark stock?
Yes, though it takes specific processes. Black edge and painted edge stocks handle dark backgrounds well, and foil or raised treatments give you bright detail on dark card. Standard four-color printing cannot produce white, so any white element has to come from the stock or a specialty pass.
What bleed and safe margin do business cards need?
Standard is 0.125 inch bleed on all sides with critical content kept 0.125 inch inside the trim. Rounded corners and painted edges need more margin. If we design the card these are handled; if you supply files, build them to those specs or expect a preflight round.
